Turkish League, Beşiktaş vs Başakşehir

Turkish League: Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş barely stop their rivals

Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş managed to slow down Trabzonspor and Başakşehir playing in Istanbul, but could only draw.

Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş barely managed to contain two of their great rivals in the fight to stay at the top of the Turkish league, although neither of them could do more than draw at home during the 28 round of the Süper Lig.

Beşiktaş received Başakşehir, a third-placed team from Istanbul, at the Vodafone Park stadium in Istanbul late yesterday; being only two points ahead of the Black Eagles, a victory for the team led by Önder Karaveli would have meant a great boost for the Beşiktaş; this, however, and despite playing at home, dominating possession of the ball, and having more chances to score, was always behind his rival.

The Egyptian football player popularly known as Trézéguet would be in charge of opening the scoring when 35 minutes had elapsed, shooting alone and with an empty goal a loose ball to the left of the area, precisely when Beşiktaş was bringing more danger to Başakşehir’s goal; the joy did not last long, however, since only 6 minutes later Güven Yalçın equalised.

There was still game to play, and during the added time before the end of the first half, Okaka appeared in the Beşiktaş area and with a wonderful header put Başakşehir back ahead. Kenan Karaman would again tie for the Eagles in the 54th minute, by finishing off a ball that had hit on the post in the small area; but no more goals were seen during the rest of the match.

Fenerbahçe faces the leader… with one less player

For its part, Fenerbahçe faced the undisputed leader of the Turkish Super League, Trabzonspor, in a game that – despite playing at home – was very difficult for the Yellow Canaries as they ended up with one less player after only 18 minutes of play: İrfan Can Kahveci was sent off with a direct red card after the referee consulted the VAR.

Only 4 minutes later, Trabzonspor made it 0-1 through Nigerian Anthony Nwakaeme, seriously complicating things for the team coached by İsmail Kartal. However, the support of the fans managed to keep Fener from collapsing, despite the fact that they had to withstand the attacks of the “Black Sea Storm” for much of the game, taking advantage of their numerical superiority.

Fenerbahçe’s efforts would be rewarded with the goal scored in the 71st minute by the Slovenian Miha Zajc, who equalised with a magnificent goal after a free kick near the area. Despite managing to save the match, Fenerbahçe’s vice president, Erol Bilecik, charged against the referee at the end of the match.

“Once again, we have witnessed a day that we can describe as a ‘stain’ in Turkish football,” Bilecik said, reiterating that Fenerbahçe is suffering “continuous injustice” from the referees. “Today, we have seen one more,” he lamented, criticising the TFF for assigning Zorbay Küçük to referee the match.

After 28 rounds in the Turkish league, Fenerbahçe is 4th with 47 points while Beşiktaş falls to 7th after the tie, with two points less. Trabzonspor leads the table with 67 points, a comfortable distance from their closest rival, Konyaspor, who precisely beat Galatasaray 2-0 on Friday.
