Turkey, goal in the world cup qualification

Turkey secures a place for the Qatar World Cup play-offs

Turkey won in Montenegro, but the victory of the Netherlands only leaves them the play-offs option to be in the Qatar World Cup.

Turkey’s national team managed to qualify yesterday for the play-offs to be in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, after beating their rival Montenegro 2-1 at the Pod Goricom stadium, in Podgorica.

Fatos Bećiraj put the Balkan team – which had nothing to play for in this game – ahead on the scoreboard with an early goal, taking advantage of a pass from Stefan Savić, just 3 minutes after the ball started to roll: in the end, it would be the only goal of the local team. However, Turkey got the equaliser in the 22nd minute, when Kerem Aktürkoğlu, a striker who plays for Istanbul’s Galatasaray, finished off a powerful pass from Abdülkadir Ömür.

After the end of the first 45 minutes, already in the second half Orkun Kökçü would score another goal for the Turks in the 59th minute of official time, establishing the final 2-1. In this way, Turkey is second in Group G with 21 points, two less than the Netherlands, which leads the classification, while Norway is third with 18.

The result of the match in Montenegro has been bittersweet for Turkey, since despite the victory they did not get a direct pass to the World Cup (it depended on a defeat by the Netherlands, which finally did not occur), but they will be able to play the play-offs -between 24 and 29 March, 2022 – along with Portugal, Sweden, Italy, Scotland, Russia, Wales, Poland, North Macedonia, Ukraine, Austria and the Czech Republic.

All the results of the matches played yesterday:

Bosnia-Herzegovina 0 – 2 Ukraine

Wales 1 – 1 Belgium

Czech Republic 2 – 0 Estonia

Gibraltar 1 – 3 Latvia

Montenegro 1 – 2 Turkey

Netherlands 2 – 0 Norway

Finland 0 -2 France
