Turkey, operation against PKK

Turkey has destroyed the PKK ”physically and psychologically”

Turkey’s Interior Minister notes that the blow inflicted on the PKK has reduced the terrorist group’s radio communications from 14,000 to 200 in just 4 years.

The operations of the Turkish security forces against the PKK terrorist group in recent years have succeeded in destroying the armed organisation’s operational capacity, to the point of destroying it “physically and psychologically,” Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said on Tuesday.

The PKK cannot even speak on the radio because of fear. We have destroyed the organisation, de facto, physically and psychologically,” Soylu said in a speech to police officials. The minister noted that while in 2016 14,582 PKK radio communications were detected, in 2019 the figure has dropped to 1,122, while so far in 2020 that number is only around 200.

Regarding the fight against organised crime, Soylu stressed that during the first five months of 2020 the Turkish security forces have eliminated a total of 110 criminal organisations, two of them national, 23 regional and 85 local.

The PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) is an organisation that in 1984 decided to resort to armed struggle to achieve its political objectives; since then, it has been responsible for more than 40,000 deaths, many of them civilians. It is included in the list of international terrorist groups by the EU.
