More than a million foreigners live legally in Istanbul

746,000 are foreign citizens living in Istanbul with a residence permit, while 548,000 are Syrian refugees.

About 1.3 million foreigners live legally in Istanbul, a city whose population is already around 16 million inhabitants, according to data provided by the Provincial Migration Management Office.

Of those 1.3 million legal foreign residents in the Turkish metropolis, 746,000 correspond to foreign citizens who have a residence permit after emigrating to Turkey, while 548,000 are Syrian refugees living in Istanbul under a temporary protection status granted by the Turkish authorities.

“Foreigners living legally in the (Istanbul) province have access to their rights and services within the framework of the relevant legislation,” the Provincial Migration Management Office said in a statement, recalling that illegal immigrants are at risk to be deported if they are detected by the security forces. So far this year, 94,708 illegal immigrants have been deported from Istanbul to their countries of origin.
