Mesut Özil is expected to make his debut today in the Turkish league match between Fenerbahçe and Kayserispor.
Mesut Özil, Fenerbahçe Istanbul’s new star, held his first training session with his new team on Sunday after completing the transfer of the Turkish-German midfielder from his old team, the Arsenal directed by Mikel Arteta.
Fenerbahçe itself confirmed yesterday the closing of the agreement with the English club, and Mesut Özil – who had already arrived in Istanbul a week ago – was received by his new teammates at the Can Bartu training field that Fenerbahçe owns in Sancaktepe, on the outskirts of the Turkish metropolis.
In a video also released by the Turkish club through Twitter, former team stars such as Roberto Carlos, Nicolas Anelka, Pierre van Hooijdonk, Alex de Souza and Robin Van Persie also gave a warm welcome to Özil, who at 32 has signed a contract to play the next 3 and a half years with the Yellow Canaries, so he could end his sports career as a football player at Fenerbahçe.
Thank you message from Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta
For his part, the already former Özil’s coach, Mikel Arteta, thanked the contribution of the German-Turkish player in a statement released by the Arsenal: “Mesut’s achievements at Arsenal are indisputable. It was a privilege to play with him and, more recently, to train him ”, declared Arteta.
“His creativity and the vision led to many goals during the time he spent in the Arsenal. Mesult was at the center of many great moments for this club,” added the Spanish coach, who nevertheless did not count on Özil since March despite being the highest paid player in the history of the Premier League.
Mesut Özil is expected to make his debut today in the closing game of the 21st week of the Turkish league that will face Fenerbahçe with the modest Hes Kablo Kayserispor. Fener is 3rd in the league with 39 points, 5 behind the leader of the Turkish Super League for 6 weeks, Beşiktaş; Galatasaray is 2nd with 39 points but with one game more than Fener, so a predictable victory for Özil’s new team would place the Canaries second, just 2 points behind the lead.
