Kayserispor, defeated and relegated to 2nd division

Malatyaspor and Kayserispor drop to second division in the Turkish league

Both teams join Ankaragücü in the list of clubs that will play next season in 2nd division. Beşiktaş won in Ankara and could play the Champions League.

Malatyaspor and Kayserispor became second division teams and will play next season in PTT 1.Lig after being defeated on the final round of the Turkish post-coronavirus league. Beşiktaş meanwhile won in Ankara and could play in the Champions League if UEFA finally upholds the veto against Trabzonspor.

Both Malatyaspor and Kayserispor -the latter, the only first division team chaired by a woman– were already located in the direct relegation zone, so they needed to win their respective matches if they wanted to have a chance to continue in the first division; however, Malatyaspor was defeated at home 0-1 by Gaziantepspor on Saturday, with a lone free kick from Senegal’s Papy Djilobodji.

On the same day, Kayserispor lost 1-2 in its stadium to second-placed Trabzonspor; although the locals managed to come back by tying the game in 86 with a penalty scored by the Brazilian Pedro Henrique, in the injury time the Norwegian Alexander Sörloth finished the match for the Black Sea Storm in a nice duet with Pereira against which Kayseri’s defense was powerless.

With these results, Malatyaspor and Kayserispor join Ankaragücü -which fell mathematically two weeks ago- in the list of teams that will play next season in the second division of Turkish football; the three teams concluded this atypical 2019-2020 season with only 32 points.

Beşiktaş placed third, could play the Champions League

For its part, Beşiktaş maintained its good streak of the last weeks and managed to defeat on Saturday in Ankara the Gençlerbiliği, who received three goals -all scored in the second half- thus snatching in extremis the third place in the league to Sivasspor, which could mean for the Black Eagles to earn a place in the Champions League.

Although only the first two classified achieve a place in the Champions League -the champion, Başakşehir, enters directly into the group stage, and the second, Trabzonspor, would play the qualifying phase- the fact is that the team of Trabzon has a one-year sanction by UEFA; if the appeal presented by the Trabzonspor -the verdict is expected next week- does not prosper, its place would be occupied by the 3rd, that is, the Beşiktaş.

For its part, another classic in the Turkish league, Fenerbahçe, after a disastrous season last year in which it almost went down to the second division, and a much more promising start this season, finally it did not achieve the results expected by its fans and ends the league in a sadly 7th place, beating Rizespor 3-1 at home.

More disappointing is the role of last season’s champion, Galatasaray, who could not get past the draw in its last game of the season played in Antalya and closes this season in 6th place; the Lions are experiencing the consequences of their poor results in the last games, since they have only been able to win 1 of 8 games once the league resumed in June after being suspended by the coronavirus.

The already champion, Başakşehir, could not finish the season with a victory and fell out of its stadium 3-2 against Kasimpaşa, which marks the end of the league in full streak with 7 wins in the last 10 games. For their part, the team directed by Okan Buruk, who this year get a deserved and historic league title, got its 5th defeat in the Süper Lig, the same as the Trabzonspor.
