Başakşehir, goal during a match

Istanbul’s Başakşehir, new leader of the Turkish league

The Istanbul team regains the league leadership. Galatasaray let out the victory in the last minute, Fenerbahçe fell defeated and Beşiktaş won by a landslide in Denizli.

Başakşehir of Istanbul was proclaimed the new leader of the Turkish league after winning in the match played away from home in Ankara, and thanks to the fact that Trabzonspor failed to pass the draw. Galatasaray also tied, while Fenerbahçe fell defeated and Beşiktaş won by a landslide.

The game played in Ankara seemed to start off not very luckily for Başakşehir, since after only 12 minutes the locals scored their first -and only- goal thanks to a penalty scored by Gerson Rodrigues, who celebrated the goal by displaying a t-shirt where he had written the message “Black lives matter” in reference to protests over the murder of George Floyd in the United States.

In the 35th minute Ankaragücü’s Brazilian goalkeeper, Ricardo Friedrich, masterfully saved a direct shot in the area, which in a later shot would end up hitting the post, thus leaving the scoreboard intact until the break. However, in the second half, after 59 minutes of play, Serbian Danijel Aleksic took advantage of a loose ball in the area after a detention by Friedrich to score the first goal for Başakşehir.

Only 14 minutes later the Bosnian striker Edin Visca shot from the edge of the area and struck the Brazilian goalkeeper, establishing the definitive 1-2. With this result, and thanks to the fact that Trabzonspor ended up tying at the last minute in Alanya (a rough match in which both teams ended with an expelled player), the Istanbul team is crowned as the new leader of the Süper Lig with 59 points, 2 of advantage over its rival of Trabzon.

Galatasaray lost all 3 points in the last minute

For its part, Fenerbahçe lost on its visit to the Kasımpaşa stadium in Istanbul and remains 7th in the table, with no options to the title; Galatasaray received Gaziantep at home in a game with 6 goals that ended up tying because of an absurd penalty committed in the discount time by the Nigerian Jesse Sekidika and that transformed Alexandru Maxim, establishing the final 3-3.

Beşiktaş was the only one of the three great Turkish clubs to win in its match on this day, endorsing Denizlispor with an away match with 5 goals from Burak Yılmaz (10th minute), Gökhan Gönül (60), Georges-Kevin N’Koudou (67), Adem Ljajic (76) and Abdoulay Diaby (78). Even so, it does not advance in the table and remains 5th classified, at an insurmountable distance of 12 points from the new league leader, Başakşehir.
