Gérard Depardieu, French actor

Gérard Depardieu plans to move to Istanbul

The famous French actor, protagonist of both movies and scandals, is reforming a boat in Istanbul that will be his new home.

Gérard Depardieu has decided to leave his current residence and move to Istanbul to live on a boat, looking for “a life of peace”, as confirmed by the 73-year-old French actor himself, who in 2013 acquired Russian nationality.

In statements made to the French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur, Depardieu explained that he now wants to spend less time in his country and start a new life living halfway between Istanbul and Dubai; for this, an old 58-year-old fishing boat, the “Notre Dame D’ Afrique”, would be transformed into his new private yacht in the Tuzla shipyards, on the outskirts of Istanbul.

As detailed by the actor, known for his love for the sea and fishing, in order to find that “new life full of peace” in the sea, he would have acquired two old fishing boats: “One of them is in Dubai. And I have converted my boat in Istanbul, which was used for tuna fishing, into an apartment.” Depardieu bought this boat from a friend in France, but in 2019 he decided to move it from the port of Marseille to Istanbul to refit it into a yacht.

The famous Turkish designer Turhan Soyaslan would be working on the ship; built in 1964 and 19.5 meters long, the “Notre Dame D’Afrique” will be delivered within two months to Gérard Depardieu, who last February announced that he had become a citizen of Dubai, although without clarifying when he had done it.

The actor no longer wants to live in France

“On the way to France from Dubai, Depardieu stops in Istanbul to see his boat. We used original parts in the renovation, it will have the original engine that was installed on the boat in 1964. We have prepared a two-story living space, but it only contains a bedroom and a living room. It is being designed as a space for accommodation, not as a luxury yacht”, said Soyaslan himself.

Gérard Depardieu, with a turbulent love life and accused in 2018 of sexual assault by a young actress, and who has maintained a close friendship with Putin for years but has been very critical of the Russian invasion of Ukraine (which he has described as a “senseless fratricide war”), has confirmed that he will travel to France to shoot a new film but assures that he no longer wants to live in his native country, and announced that he has put his vineyards and his house in Paris up for sale.
