Galatasaray sacks Fatih Terim after poor results in the league

Galatasaray confirmed the end of the contract with Fatih Terim, who ends his 4th stage with the team with terrible results in the league.

Galatasaray confirmed this Monday the sack of Fatih Terim, Turkish football legend and veteran coach, thus ending his fourth stage at the helm of Galatasaray after the team’s poor results in the Turkish Super League, where Galata has fallen up to 12th place after being defeated on Saturday in his own stadium by the Giresunspor, recently promoted to 1st division of the Turkish league.

As announced by the club’s president, Burak Elmas, through a statement, Galatasaray and Terim decided to mutually terminate the contract that had been binding on both parties since 2017, after a meeting that the Lions coach had with the Istanbul club’s board of directors. Elmas thanked Terim in his farewell for the services he provided, as well as for the good performance of the team in the Europa League, where he leads with 12 points Group E, which includes teams such as Lazio, Marseille, or Lokomotiv Moscow.

The good performance of the team in Europe, however, contrasts with the poor results in the Süper Lig, where the club remains at an insurmountable distance of 22 points from the undisputed leader of the league, Trabzonspor; besides, in its latest game Galatasaray fell defeated in its own stadium by 0-1 against the modest Giresunspor, thus becoming 12th in the standings and with no hope of approaching the top positions.

The humiliating defeat against Giresunspor seems in fact to have been the last straw for the fans and officials of Galatasaray, who has being eliminated from the Turkish Cup and only managed to get 27 points in the 20 league games it has played, with 7 victories, as many defeats, and 6 draws. In contrast, league leader Trabzonspor has scored 49 points in 20 games.

Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş, in crisis

In fact, this season of the Turkish Super League could justly carry the title of “giant killer“, since the three great historical clubs of the Turkish league – Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş – are going through a serious crisis of results; the three are now playing with interim coachs after having fired their respective coaches.

Beşiktaş is 9th but was only able to draw on Sunday against Rizespor, a team in direct relegation positions; and Fenerbahçe is in 4th place but, even if it gets to win in today’s game against Adana, it would still be 14 points behind the leader.

Terim will always be remembered for giving Galatasaray a UEFA Cup.

The news of Fatih Terim’s sack brings an abrupt end to his fourth stage at Galatasaray, in which the nicknamed as “İmparator” (Emperor) for his brusque and brawl-prone character, has nevertheless achieved for his lifelong team two league titles, a Turkish Cup and a Super Cup. Terim, who has given a total of 8 leagues, 3 cups and 5 super cups to Galatasaray, will also always be remembered for winning the previously known as UEFA Cup during his golden age at the club, in the 1999-2000 season.
