Fenerbahçe, victory in the intercontinental derby

Fenerbahçe gets a long-awaited victory in the intercontinental derby

Fenerbahçe beat Galatasaray in the classic derby of the Turkish league, in an atypical season without any of the big teams in the top.

Fenerbahçe achieved a long-awaited victory in an intense intercontinental derby against Galatasaray after four games without a win, achieving 3 important points that allow them to climb positions in the classification, despite which the Yellow Canaries are still 7 points behind the leader, Trabzonspor, which could even increase that difference today if it beats Gaziantepspor.

Kerem Aktürkoğlu opened the scoring after 16 minutes of match at Istanbul’s Nef Stadium, after a quick play started in midfield; Olimpiu Moruțan served the ball to Aktürkoğlu, who practically picked it up at the penalty spot, and from there, with an accurate right kick, easily fooled Berke Özer, making the 1-0.

On the 31st, however, the star signing of Fenerbahçe last season appeared, Mesut Özil, who starred in an absolutely spectacular play that started in Fener’s goal, when İrfan Kahveci made a long pass that Özil picked up in midfield; from there, he leaded a solo career until he stood before Muslera, who could practically only remain seated, helpless, while the ball touched the net and Fenerbahçe tied the game.

A red card and a goal disallowed, in just two minutes

The first half ended in a draw, and the second began with the same intensity, with both teams very even, although Galatasaray dominated the ball more but Fenerbahçe got more scoring opportunities. The situation changed however when in the 82nd minute, Marcel Tisserand received the red for a foul on Aktürkoğlu, leaving the Canaries with only 10.

Just a minute later, Galatasaray seemed to take the opportunity to take the lead with a header from Senegalese forward Mbaye Diagne that ended in another goal; the joy for the home fans did not last long, however, as minutes later the referee with the help of the VAR annulled the goal due to a foul of Diagne himself, who pushed Mergim Berisha into the area.

With injury time already started, the game would be ready for judgment when in 97 Fenerbahçe’s Portuguese midfielder Miguel Crespo da Silva struck down Muslera with a powerful right hand on the edge of the area that went straight to the far post, establishing the final 1-2 . Before concluding the match, an angry Fatih Terim was sent off the field by the referee, after the referee showed the Galatasaray coach a second yellow card for arguing with him.

A season without big clubs at the top of the league

With this result, Fenerbahçe returns to the path of victory and manages to climb from 7th to 5th place in the standings, while Galatasaray falls from 4th to 8th place; however, the defeat of the Lions was to be expected looking at the statistics: since the 2014-2015 season, Galatasaray has not been able to defeat Fenerbahçe at home.

The so-called intercontinental derby between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray – named for being played between teams located on the Asian and European shores of Istanbul, respectively – is considered one of the great classics of the Turkish league, and for years it has been a point of inflection to decide who prevailed in the Super League. This time, however, the derby comes at a time when none of the big three is at the top of the standings, with Beşiktaş in 9th position after being defeated on Saturday in Alanya.
