Galatasaray, Muslera injured

Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray lose, sink in the standings

Fenerbahçe lost, as did Galatasaray, which got Muslera injured. Beşiktaş won for the 1st time since October with a new coach.

Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray both lost their respective matches played at home during the closing of the 16th round of the Turkish league, sinking in the standings and once again leaving a Super League without any of the three great teams from Istanbul in the top positions, and where Trabzonspor, despite its defeat in Antalya, remains the undisputed leader.

Defeat without palliative of Fenerbahçe

Fenerbahçe, which last round had placed 2nd in the league thanks to a victory with a hat-trick by Serdar Dursun, was defeated 3-2 on its visit to Gaziantep; Brazilian João Figueiredo would be in charge of opening the scoring (minute 8) and also scoring the goal that would seal Antep’s victory (minute 73), joined by the goal scored by Romanian Maxim in the second half (54).

The Canaries for their part managed to tie with goals from Özil (30) and the Slovenian Miha Zajc (67), but they were not enough to fix a match in which Fener clearly dominated ball possession (69%) but had less success to jeopardise the rival goal (7 shots on goal from Gaziantep versus only 4 from Fenerbahçe). After this defeat, the Istanbul team falls to 5th place in the standings and has 27 points, 12 behind the leader.

5th match by Galatasaray without winning

It could not be. Galatasaray proved once again that it is not at their best this season and took a narrow loss yesterday on its visit to the Anatolian city of Sivas. Despite the Sivasspor attacks, the Lions‘ goal remained unbeatable thanks to several key interventions by Muslera.

And so it was until in the 80th minute, when a collision with his teammate Luyindama during an exit left the Galata goalkeeper lying on the ground: a moment that, with the defenseless Galatasaray goal, the Moroccan midfielder Faycal Fajr took advantage of to score the only goal of the match played at the Stadium September 4th of Sivas.

The match concluded with Muslera injured on the way to the dressing room, and İsmail Çipe playing the last minutes as a substitute goalkeeper; and with Galata – full of young promises, but who right now seems to only perform well in the UEL – signing a new week without winning: it falls now two places to 9th, and has just 23 points, 16 behind Trabzonspor.

Beşiktaş takes again the path of victory

Better luck came to Beşiktaş, who faced its first match on Sunday without Sergen Yalçın at the helm, after last Thursday the Black Eagles board confirmed that both parties had reached a “mutual agreement”, so that the former star of the team left the coaching staff, after the poor results achieved this season by the still current Turkish league champion.

With Mehmet Ekşi leading the team for this match, replacing Yalçın, the European side of Istanbul welcomed the modest Kayserispor in its stadium, which nevertheless had just beaten Antalyaspor 2-0 the last week. Mame Thiam opened the scoring for the visiting team at 38, but a header from Cyle Larin levelled things just before the players went into halftime.

Again Thiam would intervene scoring the 1-2 in the 71st minute of the second half, but the Eagles, with the support of the fans that packed the Vodafone Park stadium in Istanbul, managed to come back with two goals from Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi, who scored two goals almost in a row in 84 and 89. With the game almost finished, Güven Yalçın finished off the Kayerispor in the injury time during a counter attack, scoring the final 4-2.

With this result, Beşiktaş – which had not won since the first derby of the season – achieved its 7th victory this season and climbed to seventh position with 24 points, one point more than Galatasaray, 3 behind Fenerbahçe in the standings, and 15 away from the league leader.
