Salt Bae chef and his polemic photo

Controversial photo of the famous Turkish chef Salt Bae

Internationally renowned Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe, better known by his nickname Salt Bae, has received thousands of criticisms on social media for posing with various animals in a slaughterhouse.

The famous Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe, better known by his international nickname “Salt Bae” for his peculiar way of cutting meat, has sparked tremendous controversy and outrage from many users on social media after posting a photo on his account on Instagram in which he appeared surrounded by buffaloes in a slaughterhouse.

“A very important meeting,” Gökçe wrote at the bottom of the photo posted on his Instagram account, in which he stood in the middle of a large number of buffaloes huddled against each other in an industrial plant before being slaughtered.

Although the image received more than a million “likes” on Instagram, where Salt Bae has more than 28 million followers, it also received more than 33,000 comments, many of them negative; also on social media such as Twitter, thousands of users, including various Turkish celebrities and journalists, harshly criticised the attitude of the 36-year-old chef, who is also the visible face of the international restaurant chain Nusr-Et.

“One of the cruelest and most disgusting photographs I have ever seen”

“This is one of the most immoral, cruel and disgusting photographs I have ever seen,” Turkish journalist and television presenter Cem Seymen wrote on his Twitter account. “It is a photograph of an arrogant humanity that has been enslaved by industrial production, and which thinks it is the owner of all forms of life,” he added indignantly.

The vocalist and guitarist of the punk music group “Athena” Gökhan Özoğuz, for his part, described the chef’s photography as “horrifying“, while veteran actor Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan responded by quoting writer George Orwell in his novel “Animal Farm”: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others,” he wrote.

This is not the first time that Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe has been embroiled in controversy. In 2019, he was already accused of keeping tips from his employees at his restaurant in New York. His nickname Salt Bae was earned when in 2017 a video went viral because he appeared delicately cutting the meat and throwing salt on it in a totally unusual way, which catapulted his international fame.
