Beşiktaş and Galatasaray, Istanbul derby

Beşiktaş beats Galatasaray in the first derby of the season

Beşiktaş was victorious at its stadium on Galatasaray’s first visit this season. Fenerbahçe suffered a surprising defeat at home.

Beşiktaş beat Galatasaray in the first classic derby of this season, played last night at the Vodafone Park stadium in Istanbul during the 10th round of the Turkish league, in which two giants from the Süper Lig measured their strength in a match that was fairly even and was about to end in a draw, if the Lions had not missed a penalty in the final minutes.

Galatasaray’s Romanian midfielder Alexandru Cicaldau opened the score after 35 minutes of play with a shot from outside the area that Ersin Destanoğlu could not stop, thus setting the score 0-1 in favour of the visiting team; however, just 4 minutes later the Black Eagles levelled the things when Cyle Larin appeared to intercept with a spectacular header in the small area after a pass from the left wing by Umut Meraş, who Fernando Muslera also could not stopo.

After the break, Beşiktaş increased the pressure on the Lions’ goal; finally, the match would be decided in the second half, when in the 64th minute of play Larin appeared again to finish off a corner kick by Necip Uysal. Later, in 79, Galata had a golden opportunity to tie when the referee pointed to a penalty committed by Croatian defender Domagoj Vida, for an alleged hand in the area.

The one in charge of launching it was Mostafa Mohamed, but Ersin guessed his intentions and masterfully stopped the Egyptian’s shot, saving his team and receiving the praise of his teammates and all the local fans.

With the result of the derby, Beşiktaş moves up one place to third place in the standings, tied at 20 points with Hatayspor (2nd) and Alanyaspor (4th), while Galatasaray falls to 8th place. For its part, Trabzonspor maintains the lead achieved last round, having managed to win by the minimum in its visit to İzmir, taking 4 points ahead of its pursuers. Finally, Fenerbahçe fell to 5th place after a surprising loss at home to Alanyaspor.
