Başakşehir wins Turkish League

Başakşehir wins first league title in its history

The Başakşehir of Istanbul thus becomes the 6th Turkish team to achieve a league title, in a bad season for Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray.

The Medipol Başakşehir from Istanbul was proclaimed late on Sunday and for the first time in its history as champion of the Süper Lig just one day before the end of this season, in a Turkish league that, undoubtedly, will be marked by the coronavirus but also by the debacle of the great clubs.

Başakşehir could be proclaimed a new champion thanks to the fact that their main rival, Trabzonspor, was defeated by surprise at home 4-3 against Konyaspor, a team that until just two weeks ago was in direct relegation positions to the second division and who turned around a game with a 3-1 against, scoring their winning goal in the discount time.

In turn, Başakşehir also did his own homework by defeating Kayserispor in its stadium thanks to a lone goal in the 19th minute due to a shot in the small area by Mahmut Tekdemir, which left the goalkeeper completely out of place. With this more than deserved league title, this team re founded just 6 years ago from old İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor (İBB) becomes the 6th Turkish club to achieve a league championship.

A season to forget for Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray

In the other matches of the day, Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe also met on Sunday in a classic Istanbul derby in which the Black Eagles won 2-0, a result that however did not produce changes in the classification. In fact both teams have clearly disappointed their fans this season: Beşiktaş is 4th with 10 points behind the leader, and Fenerbahçe occupies a sadly 7th place at no less than 19 points from Başakşehir.

For their part, Galatasaray managed to defeat Göztepe of İzmir on Saturday and thus end an 8-day drought without a victory. In any case, the three big clubs show a serious crisis of results that dragged since last season, and even the good results achieved in their last matches by Beşiktaş -with serious economic problems– cannot hide a season after which the three teams have a lot to think about.

At the same time, in the last positions there is also a hard fight to avoid relegation: a fight that included up to 7 teams until this weekend, after which the Konyaspor secured a deserved stay one more year in first division thanks to winning in the last two days to the first and second classified, and scored 8 goals (the previous day defeated Başakşehir 4-3).

Apart from Başakşehir for getting their first league title in their history, another team that was very happy this game has been Erzurumspor, who secured promotion to the first division on Saturday after defeating Umraniyespor 4-1 and qualifying in 2nd place, thus joining Hatayspor which last week was proclaimed champion of the TFF 1. Lig (second division). Adana Demirspor, Akhisarspor, Fatih Karagümrük, and Bursaspor will now fight for the remaining promotion slot.
