Antakya künefe, a famous Turkish dessert, gets EU protection seal

Antakya künefe, a famous Turkish dessert, has been awarded the European Union Protected Geographical Indication seal following an application submitted 4 years ago by the Antakya Chamber of Industry and Commerce. In this way, the Antakya Künefesi becomes the 9th product of Turkish gastronomy to obtain an EU protection seal, while there are another 42 on the waiting list. Künefe is a typical cake from the Turkish province of Hatay made from fine noodles (kadayıf, in Turkish) that are mixed with butter and a special local cheese; the mixture is toasted, and later syrup and pistachio are added. Besides Hatay, another Turkish province famous for its künefe is Gaziantep.
